Copytrading on OKX: how it works, how much it costs and whether it is worth joining

Disclaimer. Cryptocurrency is a high-risk asset. The price is volatile, losses can be complete, there is no state protection of funds. Copying other people’s transactions does not guarantee profit. The material is not an investment recommendation.

Copy trading on OKX

Before you start. A beginner should read a separate step-by-step material on how to buy cryptocurrency, as well as a practical guide to trading cryptocurrency on the exchange. Copying trades does not replace understanding orders, commissions, and liquidation risk.

Copy trading on OKX allows you to automatically repeat the trades of experienced traders in real time. The subscriber chooses a lead trader, sets risk limits and his own position parameters, and the platform mirrors the trades automatically. Minimum entry threshold: from 10 to 50 USDT. There is no exchange commission for copying itself: the subscriber pays standard maker/taker rates for each trade, and the lead trader receives a percentage of the subscriber’s net profit at the end of the week.

According to Chainalysis, Ukraine ranks 8th in the global cryptocurrency adoption index and is the leader in Eastern Europe. This is no longer a market for enthusiasts. A significant part of Ukrainian users are looking for a way to participate in the market without having to independently analyze charts around the clock. For them, copy trading is the most practical tool.

In this article, we will analyze how copy trading on OKX works, how to find and evaluate a lead trader, how the weekly profit calculation works, and in which situations this strategy gives results and in which it does not.

How copy trading on OKX works

The algorithm is simple. The subscriber selects a lead trader from the public marketplace (or receives an invitation to a private profile), configures the copying parameters, and confirms the subscription. Then the platform automatically opens similar positions on the subscriber’s account every time the lead trader opens a new deal.

The subscriber does not transfer funds to the lead trader. The money remains in the subscriber’s account, and the platform only duplicates the deals. At any time, you can manually close any position, pause copying, or unsubscribe completely.

The size of the copied position is determined in one of two ways:

  1. Fixed amount — the subscriber specifies a specific amount of USDT for each trade, regardless of the amount the lead opens
  2. Proportional multiplier — the position size scales relative to the lead’s position (from 0.01x to 100x)

The first option is suitable if the budget is limited and a predictable amount of risk per trade is required. The second allows you to maintain the proportion of the lead strategy with more or less capital.

Lead trader levels and how much they earn from subscribers

OKX divides lead traders into four levels. The level is updated every Monday based on the amount of assets under management (AUM) or own balance:

Level

Requirements

Maximum percentage of subscriber profits

Bronze

from 100,000 USDT AUM or own assets

10%

Silver

from 100,000 USDT

13%

Gold

550+ followers or AUM over 10,000,000 USDT

15%

Legend

Top Institutional Level

30%

A trader with a balance of 500 USDT or more who has not yet reached the Bronze threshold can maintain a public profile with a base limit of up to 50 followers and a maximum percentage of 10%.

These percentages are not a fixed commission on each trade. The calculation takes place once a week (from Monday to Sunday UTC+8): the system sums up all the subscriber’s profits and losses on closed positions, calculates the net result and takes a percentage from it in favor of the lead. If the week turns out to be unprofitable, the lead trader receives nothing.

For private copy trading (closed profile, access only by invitation), the maximum percentage increases to 50%.

How the weekly calculation works: a nuance that is often missed

The subscriber’s balance during the week looks lower than expected. Here’s why.

Every day, the system withholds an advance percentage (withholding amount) from each profitable closed position and temporarily blocks this amount on the subscriber’s account. These funds are not debited immediately. They are stored as a potential payout to the lead: if by the end of the week other transactions have brought a loss, part of the withheld amount is returned to the subscriber’s balance, and the lead receives only a percentage of the net result.

There is another nuance here. If at the time of the weekly settlement (Monday, 00:00 UTC+8) there is at least one open joint position between the subscriber and the lead, the payout is carried over to the next week. A subscriber who constantly has open copied positions may see the blocked amount on the balance sheet for several weeks in a row without actual settlement. This is not a system error, but part of the settlement logic.

If the subscriber closes the position manually before the lead does, the lead trader still receives his percentage of the actually recorded profit at the end of the week. Manual closing does not exempt from calculation.

How to find and evaluate a lead trader

The OKX marketplace shows a full analytical panel for each lead trader. List of metrics available before subscription:

  • ROI (for 7, 30, 90 days and for all time) — profitability in percentage
  • PnL — net profit in USDT
  • Max Drawdown — maximum drawdown of the balance in history
  • Win Rate — share of profitable transactions out of the total
  • AUM — total capital of all current subscribers
  • Followers — number of subscribers and free slots
  • Trade History Length — how long the trader has a public profile

What to really look for? High ROI for 30 days with a Max Drawdown of 40% is read not as success, but as a risk profile that requires separate analysis. ROI should be read in conjunction with drawdown: if a trader made 60% in a quarter, but lost 55% along the way, the subscriber could have gone into the red at any time, depending on when they joined.

Win Rate without context also doesn’t say much. A trader with 70% of profitable trades, but an average loss that is twice the average profit, will have a negative total result. You need to look at the cumulative PnL over a sufficient period (minimum 90 days) and the dynamics of drawdown during this time.

Trade History Length is the most important initial filter. A profile with a two-week history and an ROI of 200% contains too little data to draw any conclusions.

A practical approach to selection looks like this:

  1. Filter out traders with a Trade History Length of at least 90 days
  2. Weed out those whose Max Drawdown exceeds your personal comfort threshold (for example, 20%)
  3. Of those who remain, compare PnL and ROI for 90 days
  4. Look at the distribution of trades: are there long breaks between trades, are there clusters of trades on crisis days

Risk control tools for the subscriber

The subscriber retains full control over his positions even during the copying process. Here is what is available:

  • Stop-Loss and Take-Profit — set separately for each copied trade
  • Maximum investment limit — the total amount that the subscriber is willing to have in open copied positions at the same time
  • Manual position closing — any copied position can be closed manually at any time; the lead trader continues to hold his position
  • Copy pause — stops opening new copied orders without unsubscribing from the lead

Regarding stop-losses: if the subscriber has set an individual SL and the price reaches it, the subscriber’s position is closed automatically, while the lead trader can continue to hold his. The subscriber can exit the loss earlier or later than the lead, depending on the settings.

When unfollowing a lead, open copied positions are not automatically closed. The subscriber can either close them manually or leave them open and manage them independently without copying new lead deals.

For the subscriber, this difference means a greater or lesser percentage that is withheld from his profit in favor of the lead. On OKX, the public Legend level gives up to 30%, the private mode up to 50%. On Bybit, the public ceiling is lower (15%), but in the MT5 category of TradFi instruments it increases to 30%. In general, the systems are similar, but OKX gives more space for lead traders in private mode.

When copy trading works and when it doesn’t

Copy trading solves a specific problem: it gives access to the market to those who do not have the time or experience for independent analysis, but are willing to bear market risk. This is not passive income and not insurance against losses. If the lead trader trades in the red, the subscriber also suffers a loss.

The approach works best when:

  • the subscriber understands the risk and diversifies between several lead traders with different trading styles
  • a trader with a verified history of 6 months and moderate drawdown is selected
  • risk limits are used: Max total copy amount limits the maximum impact of one lead on the overall portfolio
  • the subscriber reviews statistics from time to time and is ready to unsubscribe if the risk profile of the lead changes

The approach does not work when the subscriber chooses a trader solely based on the highest ROI over the last 30 days, sets the maximum position multiplier and no longer goes into the settings. The market always provides an opportunity to show a good short-term result. Only long-term statistics reflect a real approach to risk.

A practical way to test a lead: sign up with a minimum volume (for example, a fixed 10 USDT per trade) and observe for several weeks. This way you can assess the real frequency of trades, average position sizes and the behavior of the strategy in different market conditions without significant risk.

Summary

Copy trading on OKX is a full-fledged tool with transparent mechanics and flexible risk control. The minimum entry threshold of 10 USDT makes it accessible to a wide audience, and the weekly profit calculation cycle encourages lead traders to a stable result, not short-term bets.

The main thing when choosing a lead: not ROI for the last month, but Max Drawdown and the duration of trading history. The mechanics of the advance hold mean that the subscriber’s balance will be temporarily lower than expected - by the end of the billing cycle, this is the norm, not a glitch. The rest of the parameters are adjusted to suit the specific budget and risk appetite.
