Indications for a gynecological consultation with ultrasound examination

Gynecological diagnostics is recommended for symptoms that may indicate a disease of the female reproductive system. Signs that require an appointment with a gynecologist in Kharkiv may include:

  • pain during intimacy;
  • changes in discharge (in smell, color, volume, consistency);
  • menstrual cycle disorders (delays, intermenstrual bleeding, irregular, painful or excessive bleeding);
  • itching or irritation of the vaginal mucosa;
  • dryness of the intimate area;
  • mood swings and hot flashes;
  • decreased sex drive;
  • problems with urinary retention;
  • appearance of neoplasms in the genital area;
  • solidification or asymmetry of the mammary glands;
  • discharge from nipples (bloody, purulent);
  • sudden weight gain;
  • acne;
  • excessive hair growth.

A gynecologist’s consultation is indicated for the installation or removal of intrauterine devices, the selection of contraception, minimally invasive procedures (cryodestruction, radio wave treatment of erosions), pregnancy planning or termination. A preventive examination by a gynecologist is recommended for all women over 18 years of age at least once a year.

Features of a gynecologist’s consultation with ultrasound

A gynecologist’s appointment begins with clarifying complaints and taking an anamnesis. Then the doctor conducts a gynecological examination. Stages of a gynecological examination:

  1. The patient undresses below the waist, lies down on a gynecological chair and places her feet in the stirrups.
  2. The doctor examines the external genitalia for signs of irritation, inflammation or infections.
  3. The specialist palpates the uterus and ovaries through the anterior abdominal wall to assess the mobility, size and shape of the organs.
  4. The doctor examines the mucous membrane of the vagina and cervix using a gynecological speculum.

During the examination, the specialist may take a Papanicolaou smear (to check the cells of the cervix for pathological changes) and perform a pipet biopsy of the endometrium (to assess the condition of the inner lining of the uterus). Additionally, the specialist may perform video colposcopy (for a detailed examination of the vaginal mucosa and cervix under magnification).

After the examination, the doctor performs a gynecological ultrasound. Depending on the indications, the study can be performed transvaginally (a method in which an ultrasound sensor is inserted into the vagina) or transabdominally (a method in which the sensor is placed on the surface of the abdomen). The choice of method is determined by the doctor. Stages of pelvic ultrasound:

  1. The patient lies down on a couch.
  2. The specialist applies a special gel to the ultrasound sensor, which improves contact and transmission of sound waves.
  3. The doctor moves the sensor along the lower abdomen or inserts it into the vagina.
  4. The screen displays a real-time image of the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.

A pelvic ultrasound shows the shape and size of the uterus, the condition of the endometrium, the structure of the ovaries, the presence of cysts, benign tumors, and other changes. After the examination, the doctor forms a conclusion and, if necessary, prescribes additional laboratory tests - for the level of sex hormones, human papillomavirus (HPV), or human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The gynecologist may also refer you for a consultation with related specialists (endocrinologist, neurologist).

For 24 hours before the appointment, you should refrain from sexual intercourse, douching, using vaginal medications and tampons. It is advisable to empty your bladder immediately before the examination. It is recommended to plan a visit to the doctor on a day outside of menstruation, preferably on the fifth to seventh day of the cycle.
