World trends in houseplants: what’s really going on in Ukraine

Plant as part of the interior, not "something green in the corner"

I have long noticed how the approach to indoor plants has changed. Once upon a time, people would buy a flowerpot simply "to freshen up the room." Now everything is different. A plant has become part of the interior - almost like an armchair or a floor lamp. It is selected to match the style of the apartment, the color of the walls, the character of the space.

When I communicate with clients, they no longer look only at the name. They are interested in what kind of leaves the plant has - large or elegant, whether it will cast a shadow on the wall, how it will look next to the sofa. There are no trifles here. And yes, in Ukraine this is also noticeable: people have begun to choose consciously. They often bring a photo of their room and ask what will "fit" best in this space. I like this approach - it is about taste, not about a random purchase.

Large leaves and character

A separate story - decorative leafy plants. Philodendrons, alocasias, monsters. Large leaves, clear veins, living texture. They immediately set the tone for the room. Put one such plant - and the space already looks collected.

I often advise not to be afraid of scale. If space allows, one large plant is better than five small ones that get lost. Large leaves create a sense of volume and depth.

But our buyer always asks a practical question: "Is it complicated?" And this is an honest approach. Someone wants a spectacular plant, but without complicated watering schemes and special light. That’s why exotics are sold, but more often they take those options that can be easily grown in an ordinary apartment.

Social networks as catalogs of ideas

Instagram, Pinterest and TikTok work better today than any interior design magazines. People see green walls, hanging planters, home "jungles" - and want to repeat it in their own homes. The urban jungle trend has also taken root here. Not completely, not radically, but confidently.

If you look at the trends described in this article, you can see how they are continuing. Previously, popularity was shaped by the traditions of individual countries. Now it is shaped by a picture in the feed. They saw it, saved it, wanted it.

And one more point. Social networks have taught people to experiment. There has been an interest in combining different forms of leaves, in the contrast of dark green and light, in the play of height. This is no longer just a flowerpot on the windowsill, but a small scenography in your own apartment.

Ukrainian reality: no illusions

But there are things that bring us down a bit. Most people do not live in spacious houses, but in apartments with an average area. Sometimes there is not enough light. Heating dries the air. Not everyone is ready to spend a lot of time on care.

Therefore, even when someone dreams of a rare plant with spectacular leaves, in the end they choose a hardy option. One that will survive irregular watering and will not be offended by dry air. I see it all the time — there is a demand for beauty, but common sense wins.

I see that interest in decorative leafy plants is only growing. People are increasingly thinking not about one flowerpot, but about a composition — several plants of different heights, different textures. The space becomes alive.

At the same time, simple and reliable plants will not disappear anywhere. Because no matter how inspired we are by trends, we have to live with these plants every day. And in the end, the option that looks beautiful and does not create unnecessary trouble wins. And this, to be honest, is the main criterion for choosing.
