Zhytomyr State University named after Ivan Franko is the oldest and most powerful institution of higher education in the Zhytomyr region. Its history is connected with the famous Zhytomyr male gymnasium (founded in 1833), on the basis of which the Volyn Teachers’ Institute was opened in 1919. Having preserved the originality of the spiritual atmosphere that reigned within the walls of the gymnasium, its traditions, the institute took on the outstanding role that the gymnasium played in the social and cultural life of Volhynia. It has changed its name many times throughout its history.

The structure of the university includes three institutes, five faculties, a center for pre-university and postgraduate education, in which about eight thousand students study.
