The National Art Museum of Ukraine was founded by the efforts of the Ukrainian intelligentsia at the end of the 19th century, as the first public museum in Kiev. One of the largest and oldest in the country. The famous architect Vladislav Gorodetsky designed the museum. The museum collection was created on the basis of donations from Bogdan Khanenko, Tereshchenko, Vikentiy Khvoika, Nikolai Bilyashivsky and others.
The funds of the National Art Museum of Ukraine today number about 40,000 exhibits, including masterpieces of Ukrainian and foreign painting, sculpture and graphics from the times of Kievan Rus to the present.
