The use of precast concrete products in construction is growing worldwide.
Hollow core slabs are the most widely used precast concrete elements.
Hollow-core slabs were first introduced in the 1950s to quickly floors of high-rise buildings during reconstruction after the Second World War. And over the years, other precast elements have been adopted, such as beams, columns, lintels, so that, as we have seen, 90% of the built buildings in today's Europe are prefabricated. Hollow core slabs can be used for most applications requiring floor and roof systems. Apartments, office buildings, schools and hotels — all this is built using hollow core slabs.
They are produced in well-equipped, state-of-the-art factories using cutting-edge technology, where it is much easier to ensure consistently high quality standards than in direct construction. Plates are made on steel casting beds, — using sliding formwork technology. Produces both reinforced and prestressed hollow core slabs. Reinforced slabs have a maximum length of up to five meters, while additional strength is provided by prestressing.
As the name suggests, hollow core slabs are cast with voids to reduce weight and cost while providing excellent sound insulation. Voids or hollow channels are used to hide wiring and/or mechanical channels.
The great versatility of hollow core slabs allows them to be used not only for floors, but also as walls for tanks, as retaining walls and as external load-bearing walls for various types of buildings. Numerous examples of such buildings in other parts of the world show that the various possibilities of hollow core slabs are not being fully exploited. In fact, its worldwide development should be seen as in its infancy.
